Childhood obesity is on the rise – are your children at risk? 9 December 2014 Imagine kick-starting your day with a 30 minute power-walk. Followed by a free breakfast. Every single morning. This is what happens five days a week at St Paul’s Primary School in Mildura, Victoria in a bid to slow down escalating rates of childhood obesity and encourage children to adopt some important healthy lifestyle habits. It’s called Breakfast Club. This is a fantastic initiative that hopefully many primary schools across New South Wales will adopt, said Diabetes NSW Dietitian Shannon Lavery. According to ABC Radio National, the number of young people living with type 2 diabetes is on the rise at such a rapid rate that it will soon match the number of children living with type 1 diabetes. One of the many complications evident in these young people at risk of type 2 diabetes is sleep apnoea, which has resulted in many of them needing an apparatus to aid their breathing through the night.
