Every day scientists are learning more about the links between type 2 diabetes and dementia. Both conditions can have a major impact on a person鈥檚 quality of life as they age.

This why 芒果直播 is supporting research into how a process known as oxidative stress contributes to the development of both conditions.

Dr Camilla Hoyos from the University of Sydney is leading a project which is using MRI scanning to assess levels of oxidative stress within the brain.

鈥淢RIs brain scans allow us to observe how oxidative stress is impacting on the brain,鈥� Dr Hoyos said.

鈥淲e will measure the level of oxidative stress within the brain in people with type 2 diabetes or people with prediabetes and see how this relates to changes in brain function in older adults who are 鈥榓t risk鈥� of dementia.

鈥淚f we can understand how dementia occurs then perhaps we can develop new methods to intervene earlier and prevent dementia.鈥�
